The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers a Pre-Health Post-Baccalaureate Certificate to help students prepare for advanced study or employment in the health professions. This certificate is sponsored by the Department of Biology and administered by the Friday Center for Continuing Education.

Admission Requirements

To apply, you will need to have a four-year degree from an accredited school and to have completed introductory Biology and Chemistry courses with labs (Biology 101/Chemistry 101, for example), earning a minimum grade of B in each course. Overall, you will need to have graduated with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. You will be required to submit an official college transcript verifying your GPA and showing completion of the Biology and Chemistry courses (and your grades).

How to Apply

Apply now for admission to the Pre-health Certificate program online:

    • To begin your application, you must first create an account.
    • Use your newly created account log into the application form.

Transcripts

An official copy of your undergraduate transcript should be mailed to:

Hoyte Lee, Student Services
Friday Center for Continuing Education
CB# 1020, The Friday Center
Chapel Hill, NC 27599-1020

If you have met the eligibility requirements for the certificate program, you will be notified of your acceptance into the program.

Application Fee

The application fee for this program is $260, which is non-refundable. You may pay the application fee via credit card online or by sending a check or money order to the Friday Center. Checks should be made payable to “FCCE” and mailed to the address below.

Course Requirements

To earn the certificate, you will need to complete a minimum of five courses in math or science with a grade of B or higher in each course (STEM courses with labs are considered a single course, for the lab is a co-requisite of the course). Your course work will begin once you have been accepted to the certificate program; no transfer credit of courses is permitted. You can repeat a course, but it will only count once towards the five required courses.

You will work with a Friday Center academic adviser to select the courses that are appropriate to your goals. As long as the courses are in the science and math areas, there are no specific courses required to earn the Certificate. In addition to working with an adviser, you should also check the requirements of the health profession program or position in which you are interested to determine which courses are required or preferred.

Pre-health Certificate students are limited to a maximum of twelve credit hours per semester.

Completing the Certificate

In your final semester, you will file an application to graduate. Successful completion of the Certificate will be noted on your UNC-Chapel Hill transcript.
